Dr. Maryam Mustafa and Dr. Farah Nadeem of LUMS have received a Google Society-Centered AI research award for developing ways to make AI systems more responsive to the needs and values of underserved communities. Their project will involve women health workers, teachers, patients, and adolescent girls in evaluating AI used for maternal health and education in Urdu and Pashto, allowing communities to help define how these systems should be judged

The human brain performs complex tasks using only about 20 watts, inspiring neuromorphic computing, which mimics the brain’s energy-efficient, event-driven processing by combining memory and computation more closely. These systems could reduce energy use, improve real-time processing, and keep sensitive data on devices, but they are likely to complement rather than replace conventional CPUs and GPUs.

The University of Edinburgh redesigned an essay assessment to require students to use generative AI and submit a separate report documenting their prompts, edits, fact-checking, and learning. The approach made AI use more transparent and encouraged responsible verification, but it also showed the need for clearer guidance and a better balance between assessing students’ writing skills and their AI literacy.
